Read This Before Buying a Canary Bird

Anyone who wants to buy a canary should prepare well and not make a spontaneous purchase. The little lively birds need attention, plenty of space and good food. Here are some tips on keeping and canary buying. So you will succeed from the beginning to offer your new pet a good home.

Appropriate attitude:

If kept correctly, the life expectancy of a canary is about 10 to 12 years. Canaries are generally not solitary and should therefore always be kept in pairs at least. If the bird is given a lot of work, keeping it for a short period of time is also okay. For a couple, or even better in a small group, the canary feels most comfortable. Within a group, the number of females should always be higher than that of males. Ideal is the attitude of a male along with several females.

Even if the canaries inhabit a large aviary , they are happy about daily free flight in the apartment. So they can train their muscles and the wings do not wither. Make sure that all windows are closed and covered. Canaries can not recognize window glass and in the worst case can seriously injure themselves if they fly against it. Also poisonous plants and objects, which could injure the animals, you should put away before the free flight.

The right equipment:

A pair of canaries should have at least 0.5 m2 (100 x 50 x 50 cm) of space. In a group of birds, the cage or the aviary must be correspondingly larger. Generally, the bigger the cage, the better and the better the animals feel.

As important as the cage itself is its location. Loud sounds can scare the birds, so the cage should not be placed near televisions and stereos. The least suitable place for the birdcage is the kitchen. Here, the temperatures vary by cooking and subsequent airing too much and can make the canary sick. Instead, the cage should be elevated and completely free of draft, so that the birds feel safe and do not get sick in the draft. Canaries love sunny, but also need plenty of shade. Especially in winter, a special daylight lamp can provide sufficient light.

Tip: Choose the location of the cage carefully before you buy the canary. So you do not have to move it later and expose your darlings to unnecessary stress.

In the cage, you should have the bird several perches and branches made of natural wood available. They serve the canary as a seat and as a place to sleep and are important to wring the claws. The branches you can easily get in the wild. Well suited are for example birch, maple, pasture or unsprayed fruit trees. Canaries like to swim and are therefore especially happy about a bathhouse. The water should not be too warm, so as not to attack the feathers of the plumage. In addition, you should change the water daily, so that the birds can drink from the bathing area.

Nutrition:

The staple food for canaries should consist of a mixture of different grains to cover as many nutrients as possible. In addition, green fodder is essential. These include grasses, herbs, vegetables and fruits. But make sure the green stuff is not sprayed so you do not harm your bird with pesticides.

Tip: Just grow the green fodder for your canaries yourself. All you have to do is sow the kernel feed in small bowls on the windowsill. If the plants are about 10cm tall, you can just put them together with pots in the cage.

In addition, canaries still need stomachgrit, as a digestive aid and a limestone or a sepia peel to absorb minerals. Canaries require up to 20% of their body weight of water per day. Drinking water dispensers are best because the water in the dispensers is less polluted. Nevertheless you have to change the water daily and clean the dispenser. A few times a week, you can also add drops of vitamin to the drinking water to provide optimal care for your canaries.

Attention: Some foods are incompatible with canaries and should therefore not be fed. These include avocado, plum, grapefruit, beans, all types of cabbage and raw potatoes. As with all types of animals also applies to birds: leftovers from the table are taboo! Also prohibited are salty / spiced and sweetened foods and dairy products.
